Smart-phone analysts say they’re upbeat concerning the prospects for mobile devices dependent on Google Inc.’s Android operating process.

They’re much less specific about regardless of whether Dell Inc. can take Android and turn it into a company jackpot for a selection of mobile items.

Dell has been promoting an Android-based smart telephone known as the Mini three in China and South America because last fall. Its very first U.S. cell phone, the Aero, hasn’t showed up yet in AT&T Inc.’s stores.

The telephone corporation has an exclusive deal with Dell in the U.S. and has pledged to start promoting Dell phones before midyear.

Motorola Inc. already sells Android-based phones through AT&T, and Taiwan’s HTC also is expected to offer Android phones through the cellular phone organization.

“Android is an oncoming storm,” said Michael Morgan, an analyst with ABI Research. He expects Android cell phone makers will create phones that offer many of the same features as Apple Inc.’s popular iPhone but cost considerably much less.

A growing group of companies, including Motorola, Acer, HTC, Dell and Samsung, have announced plans to make Android-based phones or other mobile items.

What’s the attraction? Android’s basic software is free for mobile phone makers to use, and they can modify it to create customized user interfaces.

In addition, an active base of software developers is turning out Android applications that should run on all the new Android-based phones. The AndroLib.com Web site estimates that 9,000 new Android apps were released in March alone.

While the Android market looks promising, analysts say the jury is still out on regardless of whether Dell will become a successful smart-phone player.

“If they’re really serious about getting into this market and building a big company, they’re going to have to spend some serious dollars,” said analyst Iain Gillott with Austin-based consulting firm iGR. “They have got to get people thinking that buying a Dell cell phone is a cool thing to do.”

Although Dell is the world’s third-largest PC maker, its record with consumer electronics has been spotty. Dell introduced a series of portable music players in 2004 and 2005, including the $99 DJ Ditty, but dropped its family of music players in 2006.

“It was an interesting effort but not a cutting-edge device,” Gillott said. “They marketed it somewhat. In the end, they were giving them away, and it died in a few years. They can’t do that with the mobile phone.”

Dell signaled its interest in the cell telephone company in 2007 when it hired former Motorola executive Ron Garriques to run its consumer company. Late last year, Garriques become president of Dell’s newly created communication solutions line of company.

Dell does have some advantages as a newcomer in the market, Gillott said: a strong global brand in computing, ties to millions of company and consumer customers, and a reputation for product value.

In AT&T, Dell also has a link to a carrier that is growing rapidly, thanks in part to its exclusive contract to carry Apple’s iPhone in the U.S.

Gillott said he has talked with experts who have used Dell’s Aero and have been impressed. “The people I talk to say that it is really, really slick,” he said.

Some Web sites claim to have gotten their hands on an Aero, but Dell says such prototypes are not representative of the final product.

AT&T will support the Dell cellular phone somewhat, but Dell will have to back it with strong promotions of its own, Gillott said. And the phones will have to work well and be well received by customers.

“AT&T is incredibly demanding in terms of what they want,” Gillott said. “Dell is going to have to step up here.”

The Aero is Dell’s very first Android-based product, but analysts expect others will follow. Dell already has been showing a tablet device with a 5-inch screen that some gadget Web sites say will be known as the Streak.

Dell looks at mobile devices as a natural addition to its strength in portable computers, analysts say.

“Dell looks at it as moving down the food chain” to much less expensive items, Gillott said. “But Motorola and others are saying, ‘We’ll move up the food chain.’ ”

ABI’s Morgan says Dell can build a place for itself within the broader Android market if it makes the right moves.

Dell “is going to have to play to their strengths” as a maker of reliable, value-oriented items, Morgan said. “There will be space for them to play at the lower end. They don’t have to offer a super-phone.”

In a recent technology war among all the leading brands of computer and gadget world, Dell Inc. sued Hitachi Ltd., Sharp Corp. and other three manufacturers of LCDs alleging that they conspired of making the prices fix and then overcharging for their respective products.

Some of the companies in U.S. have already paid fines for being guilty in price-fixing and selling the products at artificially inflated prices to Dell in 1996.

In the federal court in San Francisco Dell filed a complaint recently against some of the companies alleging antitrust and unfair-competition.

The two big companies, Sharp and Hitachi, had admitted that they targeted Dell and overcharged for the panels plea agreements. Sharp is the largest maker of LCDs of Japan and Hitachi is also a giant of Japan that makes household appliances, nuclear reactors and hard-disk drives. Sharp is based in Osaka and Hitachi is Tokyo based in Japan. In 2008 Sharp agreed to pay amount of $120 million as fines and Hitachi agreed to for $31 million in 2009.

In the lawsuit Dell is seeking for triple damages. The company, based in Round Rock, Texas, trails Hewlett-Packard Co. (HP) and Acer Inc. in the market of personal computers.

However, the spokesman of Sharp Chris Loncto and the spokeswomen of Hitachi Lauren Garvey have not officially given any comment on this issue.

Similarly, in federal court in San Francisco, the largest mobile maker of the world Nokia Oyj has also filed a lawsuit against LCD makers. AT&T Inc. has even done the same to the manufacturers.

Some leaks are being flooded on internet about the Mini 5 phone of Dell. The internal document of the company says the phone will also be carrying some feature integrations with a host of services from Amazon.
dell-mini5
The leak mentions that the phone may be available in several “premium finishes.” It also says that the Android-powered tablet will be available in few attractive colors and designs.

Apart from the personalization options of Dell’s Mini 5, the leaked document didn’t mentioned anything else about the upcoming tablet. It reflected information on the features of the phone like the front-facing video camera, capacitive touch-screen and dock connector. Well, the leak did inform more interesting tidbits than the earlier leak.

From the leak it is also learned that Dell may be having content partnership with Amazon. May be Amazon’s Kindle, Video services, MP3 and Kindle reader app will be integrated in the phone.

It seems as if the partnership of Dell with Amazon for Mini 5 is to compete with the upcoming iPad. The tablet of Apple has the iBooks and iTunes Stores. Hence, the Amazon integrated services will help Mini 5 to give some similar features as of the tablet.

The leaked document of Dell also refers to this Snapdragon-powered device as the ‘Streak’. This is the same name that first surfaced late in 2009. However, it is still known whether this is only an internal codename or an official change.

The documents even don’t tell anything about the launching date of the device.

Smartphones are growing at a rapid speed in the mobile handset market. There are few evidences to back this statement.

The report of IDC says that the converged mobile device market has seen a growth of about 30 percent in 2009. The report also mentions that this growth momentum will continue even this year.
smartphones
Paul Jacobs, the CEO of Qualcomm, believes that the market for smartphones will split into high-end segment and low-end segment. He says that this is a trend that is speedly eroding the feature phones market.
The Yankee Group’s survey of 2009 had found about 43 percent of consumers of US plans to take smartphones their next mobile device.

Well, one question arises. Is is that all these reports is a gesture to smartphone market for new vendors?

If you look at the recent news of Palm and Garmin, it indicates that the market of smartphones is in fact not profit panacea that one would expect. According to Palm, the manufacturers is now expecting a full-year revenue going below what it had estimated earlier of $1.6 billion to $1.8 billion. The reports of Garmin is also similar. The company is till date “disappointed” with its nuvifone products sale. These can also give a jerk to new players in the market such as Dell, LG, Acer and other.

Ramon Llamas, analyst of IDC’s smartphone, said: “Instead of, ‘If you build it, they will come,’ it’s turned into, ‘If you build it, will they come?”

Lamas further mentioned that the two, Garmin and Palm, faced unique challenges. So far the marketing effort of Palm targeted the “Valentine’s Day” potential customers and not the traditional smartphone early adopters. He explained that Garmin suffered promotional scarcity and its ecosystem too much relied on interest in mapping and directions.

John Jackson, the CCS Insight analyst, said: “We knew that Palm would launch the Pre into the teeth of new flagship products (or revs of products in Apple’s case) from Apple, RIM, HTC and others.”

Jackson added further, “The same is true for Garmin, compounded by the issue of Google (and now Nokia) basically undermining the navigation proposition with freeware. Without a portfolio, a limited number of stock-keeping units (one in Garmin’s case and basically two in Palm’s case) are that much more likely to get lost in the mix. Apple is the exception, but that success story is well known at this point.”

An executive of Dell recently told to the Reuters news agency that the company is seeking for acquisitions so that it can bolster its consumer, the small and medium sized businesses that accounts for about half the sales of Dell.
dell-products
President of Dell ’s newly created consumer, small and medium business said on Tuesday to the news agency over a telephonic interview, “You will see acquisitions from us.”

He also added further in the interview, “They’ll be pointed toward the strategy that we have as a company and one of those key strategies is increasing the solutions so that we can be the best-value solution provider to customers.” He mentioned that Dell was basically looking at the key areas like the systems management and also the security.

President said, “Because of the great cash performance of the company, we ended the last quarter with approximately $11 billion in cash. So… we really have little limitation in what we can do and so it’s just going to come down to the return that we can get and how that meets our profile for delivering good returns to our shareholders.”

In 2009 the company bought Perot Systems, the technology services provider, for $3.9 billion. This was the largest ever acquisition of Dell in order to expand the technology services business and also to compete with giants like Hewlett-Packard Co. and IBM.

Dell, from the sale of personal computers generates over half of its revenue. Now it has diversified itself from PC to higher margin businesses like technology services. This was because the profit margin of the company was hurt drastically by the sales of lower-priced PCs.

Dell computers also competes with Acer and Lenovo. Last month the company said that it is focusing on the improvement of profit in the consumer business, which had hurt the overall gross margin performance of the company.

Early preview of Dell Mini 5

On March 3, 2010, in Dell Mini 5, by rohit

New details arrives of Dell’s Mini 5 tablet after an early preview of the device. The entry of the company seems of becoming successful in the tablet world. Even though the handset is having a 5-inch screen, 90 per cent larger than the smartphones, but it is easy to hold and the device is easily put in a pocket.

Persons who have tried to appreciate the Mini Five says the device is too big to be used for long time as only a phone.

In the pre-release state, the software of the Dell Mini 5 shows its preponderance as a tablet computer device over the phone features.

At the CES, the previewed model spotted and also what has been found in recent photos that there is a new taskbar-like layout in the device to move the application launcher, acts as a home screen switcher and also as notifications into separate sections. We found that the custom gallery application and the web browser of the device supports multi-touch, but it does not include the Google Maps in this feature. For instant messaging services Meebo is there and for all the Office document editing Quickoffice is pre-installed. The voice control of the device is controlled by Nuance.

The operating system is powered by Android 1.6 at present, but while shipping starts in spring Android 2.x will come preloaded. For social networking services such as Facebook and Twitter, basic widgets are pre-loaded.

There has been complaints regarding the keyboard of Mini 5. It is appreciated to be useful for thumbs but the landscape mode of the device is considered to be difficult to handle because the number pad requires the handset to be resting flat on a desk for comfortable use. Moreover, as the rival iPad can be used from any orientation, the Mini 5 provides landscape layout in only one orientation.

If we look to the hardware part then it is seen that the Snapdragon processor is fast. Since, the device has only 2GB of permanent space, so the storage may be a bit of problem.

The launching details have yet not been officially intimated, but it seems that if it is launched in similar time span to the rival iPad, it may offer lower price because of limited storage and smaller screen.
